TAIHS Dental Clinic
The TAIHS Dental Clinic is a community-controlled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health service operated by Townsville Aboriginal & Islander Health Service (TAIHS). Access is referral-only and limited to existing TAIHS Medical Service clients, who receive dental care complimentary to their existing TAIHS care. Patients without an existing TAIHS relationship, or who are not Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, should book elsewhere.
What this clinic offers
For eligible TAIHS clients referred by a TAIHS doctor, the clinic provides dental screening and check-ups, oral hygiene instruction, cleaning and scaling, fillings and extractions, wisdom-tooth removal, infection treatment, and emergency care during clinic hours. Preventive and routine restorative dentistry is the focus; specialist work is handled by external referral. The clinic notes that all care is by appointment.
Who it suits
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are existing clients of the TAIHS Medical Service and have a referral from their TAIHS doctor. The clinic is not a public-access general practice — patients without a TAIHS referral, or who are not registered with TAIHS, will need to choose another Townsville dental clinic. Transport between the medical centre and the dental clinic is offered for clients within Townsville who need assistance.
Practical access
The clinic operates two days per week — Wednesday and Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm — and is closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and weekends. The Garbutt site is at 57-59 Gorden Street. Parking and wheelchair-access details are not published on the TAIHS dental page and should be confirmed by phone before a referred appointment.
