Dental Emergency on the Gold Coast: What to Do
This is a quick reference guide for the most common dental emergencies. Bookmark it — knowing what to do before an emergency happens can save a tooth.
Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Adult Tooth
Time is critical — act within 30 minutes for the best chance of reimplantation.
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part). Do not touch the root.
- If dirty, rinse very gently with milk or saline. Do not scrub or use tap water.
- Try to replace the tooth back into the socket. Bite gently on clean gauze to hold it in place.
- If you cannot replant it: store the tooth in milk, or tuck it gently inside your cheek between the cheek and lower gum.
- Call an emergency dentist immediately. Do not let the tooth dry out.
- If you cannot reach a dentist, go to Gold Coast University Hospital emergency department.
Do not: rinse with water, scrub the root, wrap in tissue or paper, or allow the tooth to dry out.
Children: If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not attempt to reimplant it — this can damage the developing adult tooth. See a dentist to confirm the situation and for advice.
Severe Toothache with Swelling or Fever
Call a Gold Coast emergency dental clinic for a same-day appointment. While waiting:
- Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (if no contraindications) for pain and inflammation
- Apply an ice pack externally for 15 minutes on / 15 minutes off to reduce swelling
- Do not apply heat — this can increase infection spread
Go to Gold Coast University Hospital emergency department if:
- Swelling is spreading rapidly, particularly toward your eye, throat, or neck
- You have difficulty swallowing or opening your mouth
- You have a high fever (38.5°C+)
- You feel generally unwell or confused
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Severe pain (nerve involvement): Call for same-day emergency care.
No significant pain:
- Cover sharp edges with temporary dental cement from a pharmacy (Dentemp, Recaldent)
- Avoid biting on that side
- Call your dentist for the next available appointment
Lost Crown or Filling
If painful: Call for same-day or next-day care.
If not painful:
- Retrieve the crown if possible
- Clean it gently
- Apply a small amount of temporary dental cement (available at pharmacies) to the inside of the crown and place it back on the tooth
- Call your dentist for a repair appointment within a few days
Dental Abscess (Swelling / Gum Pimple)
- Call an emergency dentist for same-day assessment
- Take OTC pain relief while waiting
- Monitor swelling closely — if it spreads or you develop a fever, go to the emergency department
Post-Extraction Bleeding
- Roll clean gauze into a pad and bite firmly for 30 full minutes — do not keep removing it to check
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or sucking through a straw for 24 hours
- Avoid smoking, alcohol, or vigorous exercise
- If bleeding has not slowed after 30–45 minutes of firm pressure, call your dental clinic or go to Gold Coast University Hospital

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I have a dental emergency on the Gold Coast?
Call an emergency dental clinic immediately. Most Southport, Robina, and Surfers Paradise clinics hold same-day emergency slots. For genuine after-hours emergencies, MGA Dental operates after-hours services. If the emergency involves facial swelling spreading to the throat or eye area, fever, difficulty swallowing, or airway compromise — go to Gold Coast University Hospital emergency department or call 000.
Is a knocked-out tooth a dental emergency on the Gold Coast?
Yes — and time is critical. A knocked-out adult tooth can be reimplanted if you act within 30 minutes. Follow the first aid steps in this guide and call an emergency dentist immediately. After one hour outside the mouth, reimplantation success drops dramatically. Do not delay.
What is the Gold Coast University Hospital dental emergency number?
Gold Coast University Hospital emergency department: 07 5687 9000. Address: 1 Hospital Blvd, Southport QLD 4215. The ED handles dental emergencies with systemic features — spreading facial swelling, airway involvement, jaw fracture, or severe infection. They cannot perform root canal or place fillings; they provide antibiotics, pain management, and refer you to a dental clinic for definitive treatment.
What is a dental abscess and is it an emergency?
A dental abscess is a bacterial infection forming a pocket of pus in or around a tooth. It is an urgent condition requiring same-day dental care. Signs: throbbing pain, swelling of the face or gum, fever, a bad taste in the mouth. If the swelling spreads rapidly, particularly toward the eye, throat, or neck — go to hospital immediately. An abscess spreading to the airway or brain is a medical emergency.
Can I go to Gold Coast University Hospital for a toothache?
GCUH emergency can provide pain relief (IV analgesics) and antibiotics for dental infections, and can assess patients with facial trauma. They cannot provide definitive dental treatment (fillings, root canal, extractions for non-emergency cases). For a straightforward toothache without systemic features, an emergency dental clinic is the appropriate first contact.
